International Day of Peace 2020

On 21st September each year the United Nations (UN) recognises the International Day of Peace, devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through meaningful actions such as observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.

The theme for 2020 is “Shaping Peace Together”, with countries encouraged to spread compassion, kindness and hope in the face of a global pandemic. The UN asks that countries stand together against attempts to use the virus as a means to promote discrimination and hatred, that we are not each other’s enemies: our common enemy is the COVID virus that threatens our health, security and way of life.

During Refugee Week 2020, the International Organisation for Migration UK (IOM UK) supported the launch of a digital engagement initiative by our partners Together Productions and I Speak Music. People worldwide were invited to participate in the creation of a new music video celebrating diversity and the extraordinary contributions of those who have travelled and made their home in new lands.

Over 120 performers from around the world have offered contributions which have been edited into a final video. It will be released today at 5pm BST to celebrate International Day of Peace 2020, launching the video on YouTube Premiere.
