Prosperous City

Penshaw Monument

The focus of the Prosperous City Partnership is to create an enterprising and productive global city with a strong and diverse economy. Creating a city that provides jobs and careers for generations to come, where everyone has the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from the local economy. People will fulfil their potential to be skilled, motivated and wealth creating without losing the special characteristic of Sunderland’s balanced way of life.

The Prosperous City Delivery Partnership manages the long-term economic regeneration of the city. It aims to promote a diverse economy that provides secure and rewarding job opportunities.

Partners across the city have worked together to achieve three related aims:

  1. To improve work skills at all levels so that people in Sunderland are trained to meet the needs of businesses
  2. To expand and diversify Sunderland’s economy by attracting new investors and encouraging existing businesses to grow
  3. To increase the average income of the city by supporting unemployed and underemployed people to gain more skills to help them into mainstream employment.

Aims and Priorities

We want Sunderland to be an enterprising and productive city. We think its residents should have the opportunity to benefit from the local economy.

With this in mind, our priorities are to:

  • Promote an enterprising environment so more local businesses are created
  • Support existing businesses growth
  • Support the development of sustainable public transport
  • Ensure that decent housing is available to all
  • Increase economic inclusion by addressing worklessness and improving skills of people in Sunderland
  • Minimise climate change and promote sustainable forms of economic activity
  • Narrow the gap between deprived and prosperous neighbourhoods
