Volunteering Strategy

The Sunderland Volunteering Strategy has been developed to reflect the changing landscape of volunteering both nationally and at local level. People volunteer for many different reasons for example to build up their sills, increase their confidence and to meet new people. A city-wide, partnership approach to volunteering can bring with it a host of benefits for individuals who volunteer, organisations and communities.

The City Council and its partners are proud of everyone of the hundreds of volunteers who are contributing to our city. The role of volunteering in building stronger communities has become increasingly prominent over the past number of years, and this is continuing under the current government.

In Sunderland we are confident that we are already working hard to support and encourage people to take an active role in their communities. The council financially supports many voluntary groups and supports their work with advice and information; there are many success stories.

The City of Sunderland has already taken a number of positive steps to support volunteering at local level - for example, development of a Sunderland Volunteering Toolkit and organisation of annual volunteer celebration events. The Sunderland  Volunteering Strategy is supported by an Action Plan for the Sunderland which will build upon existing activity and support volunteering in Sunderland by:

  • Increasing the number and diversity of people volunteering in Sunderland
  • Recognising and rewarding volunteers
  • Supporting volunteer confidence, learning, skills and employability
  • Increasing the number of Employer-Supported Volunteering Schemes
  • Improving volunteer management and volunteering programmes.
