Fairtrade Fortnight 2011 Bunting Challenge
Sunderland’s Fairtrade supporters, partners and community groups showed off their label on Wednesday 23rd March.

As part of Fairtrade Fortnight 2011 activities, groups from all over the city decorated Fairtrade bunting with their own designs and messages. Over 250 feet of Fairtrade bunting (over 400 triangles of Fairtrade cotton) was collected and a section of it was displayed at Penshaw Monument.
Sunderland’s fantastic efforts during the fortnight will be part of a Guinness World Record attempt to create the longest and fairest piece of bunting by the Fairtrade Foundation.
The current record stands at 2,696 metres and the target is 4,350 metres – over two and a half miles!
Sunderland’s bunting will join others from all over the UK to be measured and shown off on World Fair Trade Day on Saturday 8th May 2011. Sewn together, they will make a two and a half mile statement about the importance of Fairtrade and trade justice for farmers and workers across the developing world.
Groups, organisations and partners taking part in Sunderland included Sunderland University, Gentoo, NHS Trust, Sunderland Partnership, Benedict Biscop Primary School, Bexhill Primary School, Bridge Women’s Group, St. Paul’s CE Primary School, Sunderland City Council, Soroptimist International Sunderland, The Arts Included at Thornhill School (TAIT) and St Aiden’s RC School.
